How to Choose the Perfect Foundation: A Guide to Understanding Your Undertone

An easy guide to help select the correct foundation with the perfect undertone.

It is crucial to know what your Undertone is when selecting a foundation for yourself.

The reason why knowing your undertone is essential is because it will help you create the perfect canvas for your makeup and it will blend perfectly with your skin and not give you that ashy or grey look that alot of women complain about.

Now let me tell you how to find your correct undertone and explain what exactly it is!

What is an undertone?

An undertone is a faint hue found directly under your skin, this colour determines the tone of your complexion.

Your undertone remains the same for the whole of your life and will not change with age, skin condition, sun exposure or for any other reason. The shade of your skin can change over time or even depending where we are in terms of summer or winter but your undertone remains the same.

Skin Tone Undertones in South Asians

There are 3 types of undertones:

The warm undertone

The warm undertone – golden or peach tones, yellow and also olive shades. This undertone tends to tan easily and carries well golden coloured jewellery.

The cool undertone

Cool undertones are people with pink, red or blue hues and tend to look better in silver jewelry rather than gold. When exposed to sun cool toned people mostly burn rather than tan.

And then there neutral undertone

These people look great in both silver and gold jewellery and are usually a weak pink or red undertone and also a yellow shade.

How to find your undertone

Look closely at the inside of your wrist and even closer at your veins.

If your veins appear to be green you are warm toned.

In case they appear blue or purple, your undertones are cool. And if they appear blue or green you probably are neutral!

Test for Jewelry

As previously indicated, consider whether silver or gold jewelry suits you better. While silver accentuates chilly undertones, gold frequently accentuates warm undertones.

Skin Tone Undertones in South Asians:

Warm or neutral undertones are common in South Asian complexions, which range from fair to deep.

Undertones can sometimes be difficult to determine as there isn’t a one size fits all solution.

Selecting the correct foundation requires alot of patience and some unfortunate buys that have ended up at the bottom of your drawers.

Selecting your foundation

Once you know your undertone, choosing your foundation becomes alot easier.

Brands usually use codes to help customers pick correct undertones and shades. They are normally labelled as W for warm, C for cool and N for neutral.

Always test your shade on jawline

Always test shades on your jawline and blend in the closest match. Never decide right away if the foundation shade is the right one for you because, some foundations do oxidize and become a shade darker. Wear the tester foundation for a good few hours, check how it looks in natural light and then make the decision.

Selecting the correct type of foundation for your skin type:

For oily skin it’s ideal to use an oil free foundation, or a matte one. This will help reduce shine.

For Dry Skin you want to add hydration and a glow so it would be best to use an illuminating foundation which will make skin look super glowy and hydrated.

For Combination Skin I would recommend using 2 foundations from the same brand but one oil free and the other hydrating. It’s abit of a hassle but because combination skin is in some parts dry and and in some oil this would keep your skin balanced and not draw attention where you least want it.

Those with sensitive skin should look for foundations that are “hypoallergenic,” “non-comedogenic,” or “fragrance-free” in order to prevent irritation.

Summary

Understanding your undertone, picking the appropriate shade, and deciding on a formula that works for your skin type are all important steps in finding the ideal foundation.
