The Barnyard Heroine: Laila’s Brave Choice and a Surprising New Ally
In a local village, Laila, a young chicken, lives at a beautiful and very peaceful farm with her parents. She’s an extremely curious little chicken who loves to explore her much-loved coop and barnyard.
This time, Laila, being the curious little chicken she is, really wanted to go beyond the barnyard to the long grassy area to explore, but her parents wouldn’t allow this, and her friends would always warn her of how dangerous the long grassy area could be.
One day she decided that she would go across the barnyard to the long grassy area. She asked Seema, her best friend, if she’d go with her. Seema tried very hard to convince her not to go.
“Laila, it’s not safe outside the barnyard; I don’t think you should go as it’s dangerous.”
Laila snapped back, “Oh Seema, I’ll be absolutely ok; just don’t tell mama and baba.”
The curious little chicken walked toward the small gates that led out to the long grass area, and she kept walking further and further and suddenly heard a voice from underneath a fallen tree.
“Help me, help me, please.”
Laila stopped to see who was stuck beneath the tree, and to her horror, it was a huge slithery snake. Saleem the snake hissed and, in his feeble voice, said again,
“Help me, little chicken.”
Laila thought for a moment; she had heard a lot of scary things about snakes, but at the same time she felt very sorry for him too.
She gathered her courage, and with all her strength, she started to peck away and push out the branch that he was stuck under.
Peck peck peck, push push push.
Finally, Laila managed to free Saleem, the slithery snake.
“Well, thank you for freeing me, young chicken.” He hissed and stretched and gave Laila a very cunning look with a smirk across his face.
“I was stuck for so long, and the wait for someone to come and free me has made me so hungry.”
He hissed at Laila, which frightened her to her feathers!
“You wouldn’t have me for a meal! I assisted you!”
Saleem sensed the fear in Laila’s voice and, for some odd reason, had a change of heart.
He sighed and said.
“You’re right, you saved my life, and I’m indebted to you and your kindness.”
Laila felt herself breathe again.
“No one has ever been so kind to me, little chicken; I shall always remember this and you.”
He rolled over and went off, slithering through the long grass.
Laila ran back to her barnyard so fast she couldn’t feel her feet anymore.
Her parents were surprised to see her all flustered and shaken when she got back.
She was just relieved to see her parents and be back home safely.
Moral
The moral of this story is that even people with malicious purposes can occasionally be disarmed by kindness. But exercise caution – help-giving should be done with an understanding of the consequences.
