A Dark Presence: Sumbal and the Secrets of Her Twin Brother | Part 3
His voice started to fade, and she finally fell asleep. That following day, Sumbal went to the kitchen to ask if breakfast was ready, where she found her mother looking through a photo album but was holding onto a specific photograph. She sensed Sumbal’s presence and, without looking up, quickly closed the album and shoved it into the bottom kitchen drawer.
“What’s that?” Sumbal asked, “What are you hiding?”
“Nothing. Just old memories,” her mother replied hurriedly and started cooking breakfast.
Sumbal waited around for her mother to finish in the kitchen, so she could check the album and maybe find a reason why her mother was hiding it.
Her mother finally left the kitchen, and Sumbal quickly rushed to the drawer, took the album, and headed back to her bedroom.
Heart racing, Sumbal took the photo to bed with her, it was a picture of her mother, her brother and herself.
In that same picture, Sumbal noticed a ghostly face of a little boy peering through the window and was pretty much clear. It wasn’t a glich or anything, she thought to herself.
The presence of her brother Sami returning in her room grew stronger that night.
She whispered, “Sami, what are you trying to tell me?”
The answer was clear. The dollhouse door creaked open, revealing a new note inside. It read: He’s in the basement.
Sumbal knew she had to find out the truth. The next morning, she confronted her mother again.
“What’s in the basement?” she asked.
Her mother’s face turned pale. “You’ve been snooping,” she said harshly. “Stay away from it and concentrate on your revision; you’ve got an English exam coming up in a couple of weeks.”
Later that night, while her parents slept, Sumbal crept down to the basement. The air was heavy and cold. She hesitated, but a faint glow at the bottom of the stairs urged her forward.
At the bottom, she found Sami’s old toy truck, abandoned. As she picked it up, a flash of memory overwhelmed her with a loud slam, her mother shouting, and Sami crying.
A shadow appeared on the wall. And then came the voice: “She knows.”
