Skincare is something that is not taught anywhere. Over the years, I myself have learned skincare by reading lots of blogs and articles. And in our quest to be better, lot of us pick bad skincare habits without knowing it, so today at Sphere Medium, I’ll share 7 skincare habits to leave behind because they’re destroying your skin.
To achieve that nice, glowing, healthy skin, you definitely need to work on your skincare habits and stop the bad ones.
7 skincare habits to leave behind
Over Exfoliation
It’s a process of unclogging pores and removing dead skin cells. Really, it should be done twice a week. However, over exfoliation is harmful for skin as it causes micro tears in the skin and thins out the skin layer, making your skin barrier system weak. This in turn will make your skin sensitive and more vulnerable to acne-causing bacteria, and not to forget, over exfoliation can lead to drying of the skin.
How much to exfoliate? : The rule of thumb is to start with the lowest number.
That is once a week for a month. If you feel the skin still feels clogged and there are no signs of allergy or redness, then exfoliate twice a week, keeping a 3 to 4 day gap between each exfoliation. After exfoliation, don’t forget to repair and nourish skin with hydrating serum and moisturizer. So overexfoliation is a skincare habit to leave behind.
sleeping with makeup
Another skincare habit to leave behind is sleeping with makeup on. I know sometimes we get lazy or too tired, but removing makeup is crucial for obtaining flawless, glowing skin, as makeup can clog pores and, if left overnight, lead to more serious issues like acne.
So always remove makeup by the double cleansing method using either misceller water or cleansing oil. To know more about double cleansing, read “The Truth About Double Cleansing: Myths Busted” at Sphere Medium.
Not drinking enough water
Hydration is the key to glowing skin. Everyone knows the importance of drinking enough water, but when it comes to skin, most people like to concentrate on using moisturizers and serums for hydrating skin rather than drinking clean water.
It should be kept in mind that creams and lotions can only penetrate to a certain extent, but water taken orally has far more benefits. It hydrates and plumps the cell within, making you look healthier.
How much water one needs to drink? It depends on his environment, but most humans still require 2 to 3 liters of clean drinking water daily. So not drinking enough water is a skincare habit to leave behind.
Not changing towels
This is definitely one of the skincare habits to leave behind!
You can use any kind of cleanser or soap for washing your body, but if you use a dirty body towel on your face, you’ll end up introducing tons of germs and fungi on your face, leading to body acne, face acne, and fungi infections.
So make sure to change your body towel every couple of days; keep a separate towel for your face and change that daily; and never use your body towel on your face.
Pro tip: never share your towel with anyone.
Stop touching your face
Worst skincare habit to leave behind is constantly touching your face. One study showed on average we touch our faces up to 200 times per day. Although many times we consciously want to avoid touching our face, sometimes it just gets unavoidable.
Moreover, always wash your hands after touching anything dirty, especially when coming out of the bathroom. Also, it’s a good practice to keep hand sanitizer with you and use it more often.
Not moisturizing
A skincare habit to leave behind is not moisturising after cleansing. Because sebum has already been removed by cleansing, leaving skin dry. If we don’t moisturize afterwards, the skin sends a signal to the sebaceous gland to produce more sebum, making the skin more oily. And more oil on skin means more pimples, so never forget to moisturize skin.
Popping your pimples
One of the skin care habits to leave behind is popping your pimples. One can easily introduce bacteria from fingers and nails into the wound, which can lead to recurrent acne. And due to damage caused to skin by pressing pimples, it will result in the formation of deep scars.
So here are 7 skincare habits to leave behind so that you can achieve glowing, healthy skin. Let me know in the comments below what other skincare habits you have that you want to stop immediately. Do share in comments.
