Although they offer numerous advantages, overuse of them can have major negative consequences on individuals and their relationships. Maintaining a good balance in our technologically evolved society depends on understanding these effects.

We become socially isolated, and over time this can worsen as we begin to enjoy only our own company and our dependence on these gadgets which we mindlessly reach out for literally every few minutes which stops us from having a meaningful conversation with a real person.

We begin to ignore obligations and start to procrastinate and this can cause conflict between you and your partner which can affect your home life and socially cripple you too.

Children receiving distracted attention from parents can affect their emotional development and cause feelings of neglect. Usually, children look up to their parents as role models and act out in the ways their parents do.   • Entertainment. Watch movies, listen to music, play games and of course – social media platforms

  • Addiction. We keep on reaching out for our mobile phones to check if there’s a new notification, comment, like etc
  • Privacy issues. We all know our mobile phones collect data putting our security at risk.
  • Diversion. It’s a huge cause of distraction. When we keep reaching out for it every few minutes we loose focus and output.
  • Health Risks. As was already said, long use can cause issues with mental as well as physical health.

Create boundaries and set aside specific times when NOT TO USE social media – like while eating or spending time with family. Putting mobile phones away at least an hour before bedtime so you and your spouse can have some quality time together.

So it all comes down to taking regular breaks from social media to disengage and refuel, this really helps if you feel you’re becoming extremely reliant on it. Experts suggest to go completely social media free to detox yourself once in a while. Maintaining mental and physical health as well as developing personal relationships calls for striking a balance between being connected and really present in the world. If we set reasonable limits and use technology wisely, we could gain from it without giving in to its negative effects.
