Compassion vs. Skepticism: A Story of Faith and Change

The Two Brothers, the Beggar & a Lesson.

In a small Iranian village called Masuleh, there lived two brothers, Ahmad and Hassan. Hassan was a very soft and kindhearted person and helped others, mostly the less fortunate, very wholeheartedly, while Ahmad, though equally kind, was often indifferent and would think over things more practically.

One chilly afternoon, both brothers were walking through their local marketplace to run some errands for their mother when they saw a beggar sitting under a tree, barely clothed, shivering, and looking very frail.

“Khaahesh mikonam, baraadar, I need food or some coins, please help”

The beggar pleaded. He did not seem of age but, had seen a good few years by now.

Hassan, as usual bursting with compassion, handed the beggar some coins and also gave up his lunch so the poor beggar could eat.

Ahmad snapped at Hassan!

“Why do you waste your food and money on these people? He is fit enough to get some work or run errands for people and make a few coins! You will see him again begging tomorrow, my brother. This is just easier for them to do.”

Hassan chuckled.

“My dear Ahmad, I cannot stop myself from helping someone in need; it in no way is a waste – in fact, it’s a good deed, brother.”

The very next day, the brothers went to the same marketplace. To their surprise, they saw the beggar dressed in clean clothes, helping a shopkeeper unload goods. The beggar, who was named Rustam, saw them and hurried over.

“Dast-e shoma dard nakoneh, my baraadar,”

He said to Hassan

“Thank you so much, sir, for helping me when I was in need. Your help gave me the urge and belief that I can change my situation, and now I am working as a laborer and have been given a roof over my head too.”

Hassan smiled back at him,

“Masha’Allah baraadar. Masha’Allah, may you stay blessed.”

He said whilst patting Rustam’s shoulder.

Ahmad stood there with a shocked look across his face when Rustam turned to him and said,

“Baraadar, you rekindled the faith in me that I lost many years ago. Faith in myself and faith in Allah. Your words also taught me that in order to make others believe in me, I must prove it by actions and not mere words, as not everyone believes in us until we show them something.”

Ahmad thought for a while and realized that determination, being compassionate, and a kind act, can change lives.

From then on, Ahmad would always help the less fortunate alongside his brother and feel liberated and so much at peace.

Moral: A single act of kindness can inspire hope and change, and even skeptics can learn the value of compassion.
