Causes of hair fall and how to fix it
Do you know hair fall is not a disease but a sign that your body gives it to you when something is just not right in your body? Today at Spheremedium we’ll know the science of hairgrowth, leading causes of hair fall, and how to fix it.
To understand the causes of hair fall, it is important to understand the science of hair growth.
Hair actually grows in cycles, so we tend to feel that all the hair strands are growing on our scalp, but it’s not the case.
Hair grows in cycles, which are:
The Anagen phase or the growth phase, that’s when the hair actually gets thicker and longer, and it grows in length.
The Catagen phase: it’s the resting phase.
The Telogen phase or the shedding phase.
So on the scalp we have about 1 lakh hair follicles out of that
90% are in Anagen or growing phase and about 8% are in the shedding phase and 1 to 2% are in resting phase, so that is why we say that losing 100 strands of hair a day is normal.
Causes of hair fall:
Any type of imbalance in the body can lead to hair fall. Like I’ve said before, hair fall is not a disease but more like a symptom of any kind of underlying disturbance that is occurring in the body. So the most common causes of hair fall are:
- Nutritional deficiency: If you have iron or zinc deficiency, vitamin B12 or D deficiency, this can also lead to hair fall. This is one of the most common causes of hair fall, and luckily it’s easy to diagnose and treat it.
- Hormonal imbalance: PCOS or thyroid disorders are also some of the most common causes for hair fall.
- Stress: Any type of stress can lead to hair loss. Whether it’s a physical stress due to weight loss or a mental stress due to exams or change of job, all that can lead to hair loss.
- Hair fall and scalp health: Whenever we think about hair fall, we often overlook the importance of scalp health. We have to understand that the hair grows from the scalp, so the health of the scalp is very important. Any kind of inflammation that is occurring on the scalp, causing redness, flakiness, dandruff, and itchiness on the scalp, could be one of the causes of hair fall.
- Blood flow to the scalp is important. Because this provides nutrition for the hair follicles to grow. There have been studies that have shown that tightness of the scalp, which led to reduced blood circulation to the scalp, could be one of the causes of hair fall and hair thinning.
How to fix hair fall
Balanced diet
A healthy, balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables is very important for hair growth. Don’t follow fad diets and Don’t eliminate carbohydrates completely from your diet, as this can affect hair growth. Fat and carbohydrates in adequate quantities are important for proper absorption of nutrition.
Treat deficiency
Please consult your dermatologist if you’re suspecting any kind of deficiency. It must be treated in order to reduce hair fall and for hair to regrow.
Keep scalp clean
This is often overlooked because a lot of people feel if they wash their hair frequently, it will lead to more hair fall. That’s absolutely untrue. You must keep your scalp clean and wash it regularly, at least two to three times a week.
Treat dandruff
Treating dandruff is very important because flaking, itching, irritation, and inflammation in the scalp can lead to worsening of hair fall. Using anti-dandruff shampoo helps, but if it doesn’t get better, do seek professional help.
De-stress
Stress is one of the main causes of hair fall. Losing hair can be very stressful in itself, so try to incorporate some kind of exercise and breathing technique into your daily routine to cope with stress.
Treatment for reducing hair fall and promoting hair growth
Rosemary oil:
Topical rosemary oil has been shown in a small study to be as effective as minoxidil in promoting hair growth, and it’s natural too. For best results, use it in conjunction with microneedling.
Medicine:
The most popular one is minoxidil, more commonly known as Rogaine. Though there are other options available over the counter too, it’s always best to consult your doctor.
In-office treatments:
Microneedling, when performed on the scalp, is helpful in promoting hair growth. This alone or in combination with PRP has shown good results in terms of hair growth.
Also, a fairly new treatment option that is done in combination with other treatments is using low-level laser therapy caps, which stimulate hair growth on the scalp. Some of the FDA-approved laser caps are I Restore and Capillux.
What should you not do?
Avoid any types of chemical treatments or hair treatments when you’re having hair fall. Let the hair fall get controlled before you go on with any of these treatments on your hair.
So that was all about the causes of hair fall and how to fix it. Do share in the comments how you take care of your hair and what you do for hair growth.
