Slugging, Humidity, and More: Expert Winter Skincare Tips
Winter skincare tips Winters are officially here, and when the temperatures drop, it definitely affects our skin. One thing which I’m sure everyone tries to avoid in winters is dry and dull skin, so today I want to share with you at Sphere Medium some winter skincare tips for surviving this cold weather without compromising on your glow. Winter skincare tip #1: More moisture Winter is the time of year when we want to amp up the moisture. We definitely want to nourish and condition our skin with lots of moisture, so in your winter skincare routine, it’s a good time to switch to more nourishing, creamier moisturizers. Another tip when it comes to moisture and moisturizers is don’t be afraid to play around with moisturizers. Some night creams without actives like retinols are great candidates to be used in the morning as well. So don’t be afraid to save those more nourishing creams exclusively for nighttime. Another easy way, without changing things up too much, is to either switch out your essence or add in a toner that has a milky, creamy texture. Toners and essences don’t just have to have that watery, light texture. This is a really big category of products that have become very popular over the last few years with lots of choices. So it will be easy to just add one product rather than changing the whole skincare routine. So if you want to amp up the moisture, add in a nourishing essence or a toner that has a creamy, silky texture. It can be just that nudge in the right direction that keeps your skin really balanced and soft, resisting the dehydration and the dryness without breaking the bank. Winter skincare tip #2: Slugging Slugging is the technique that seals all your skincare into your skin. When done correctly at night, you’ll wake up in the morning with skin that is not only glowing but also hydrated, moisturized and smooth. Proper slugging products do bring a quality of occlusion to the skin. These ingredients create a barrier or a seal or a protective layer on the top of the skin so they don’t let anything out or in. Such ingredients are dimethicone and petrolatum. So they not only help to resist dehydration, which is the loss of hydration through the skin, which especially happens during sleep. But you can also lose a lot of your skincare on your sheets and on your pillows, and so the barrier created by slugging also helps to resist that, so it is great for keeping your skincare products in place and bringing more moisture in. Winter skincare tip #3: Humidity Humidity is your best friend. We tend to turn on heating inside houses as soon as the weather gets cold. This hot air can dry out the environment, so even if it’s humid during the winter, it can get quite dry inside your house. So the dryness in the air, lack of humidity, and lack of moisture can actually induce something called trans epidermal water loss in our skin, and that’s basically dehydration. So when we put on skincare products, we’re always trying to replenish moisture back into our skin, but when the air is super dry, it can start to take the hydration from our skin, and especially if we’re struggling with a weak or damaged moisture barrier, we’re going to feel this even more because the barrier is what helps to keep all hydration in; when it’s weak or damaged, it’s a compromised barrier. And the hydration escapes even more easily. This is really the reason why occlusion and slugging work to resist trans epidermal water loss, especially if your barrier is damaged, because it creates another barrier on top of your skin. So barriers are important as they help to keep the hydration in. Sometimes in cold, dry weather we often wake up coughing because our throat gets dry and scratchy. If you’re feeling it in your nose and in your eyes, just invest in a humidifier. Because these are all signs that the air in your environment is too dry and you need to get some more humidity in there. This is one of the most underrated skincare tips, because when the environment is so dry, everything in your body starts to dry up, so sleep with a humidifier. When you go to bed, turn it on; it will add some water, some moisture, into the air, and when there’s a higher moisture content in the air, it’s less likely that it’s going to escape from your skin. Winter skincare tip #4: Brighten Dull Skin It can be really hard to get that real glow from within skin in the dead of winter. Like, trust me, I know dull, dry, flaky skin can really be common in the cold temperatures. This is where exfoliation comes in, and the use of AHAs can be very helpful for quick results. When you notice your skin is starting to get a little bit dull and flaky, then reach out for AHAs. I highly recommend you read “Exfoliate like a Pro: The Ultimate AHA vs. BHA Guide” at Spheremedium for more details about using AHAs. In short, it works on top of the skin to take away all the flakes to smooth out the texture to soften the skin, but it also helps to brighten up the skin, and when you’re using it consistently, it can also just help with aging goals too. Winter skincare tip #5: Protect from Hot Water Now I will admit to you one of my most favorite, most pleasurable things on the planet, especially when it’s cold outside, is a hot bath; however, the hot water, especially if it’s scalding hot water, which can make skin turn red, is something you should avoid because that hot water can really strip all the good moisture from your skin and weaken your skin barrier over time, and maintaining a healthy skin barrier is

Do you know we lose collagen constantly from the age of 25? Our body starts losing 1 to 2 percent collagen every year, so it means by the age of 40 to 45 we have easily lost 35 to 40 percent collagen from the original reserve, which leads to sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, skin dryness, as well as body aches.
