Sumbal and her brother Sami: The twins | The Ending
Sumbal’s mother sat frozen, her face pale and her hands trembling as Sumbal confronted her with the note and the confession.
“Why, Mama? What happened to Sami?”
Her mother’s voice cracked, her gaze darting everywhere but at Sumbal.
“It wasn’t intentional but an accident. He wouldn’t stop crying and screaming, and I… I just lost control for a moment. I didn’t mean to hurt him.
Sumbal’s breath caught in her throat.
“You lost control? That’s your excuse? You silenced him and left him down there like he didn’t matter? He was your son! My brother!”
Tears streamed down her mother’s face as she sank into the sofa.
“I was overwhelmed, Sumbal. Your father was always away, and I was left to manage everything. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want anyone to know. I couldn’t face the shame.”
“Shame, Mama, shame?”
Sumbal’s voice rose, her anger boiling over.
“You cared more about your reputation than your child? All this time, I thought I was imagining him, but he was calling for justice! He didn’t deserve this, Mama! He deserved only love!”
Agonizing grief spread across her mother’s face.
“I loved him just like I love you, Sumbal; I haven’t stopped loving him. Only he was different; he was cursed! He wasn’t a normal child like you, Sumbal.”
“Mama, please! Stop this nonsense. How have you hidden this for so many years? How did people not question you about his where abouts?”
Sumbal yelled!
“but Sumbal I’ve lived with this guilt every single day. It’s eaten me alive, Sumbal; it really has. You have no idea what it’s like.”
“I couldn’t care less how you feel Mama!”
Sumbal broke down.
“You let him die, and you let me think I was crazy for hearing his voice all these years! you never spoke of him, you never took me to visit a grave! Was he reported missing? I’ve so many questions for which I deserve answers! What you did Mama….that’s unforgivable. And Mama, I’ll make sure you pay!”
That night, Sumbal called the authorities. The next day, the house buzzed with activity as the basement was excavated. Sami’s small, fragile remains were uncovered, confirming the truth Sumbal had feared.
Her mother was led away in handcuffs, her wails piercing the air.
“Sumbal, please forgive me!”
She cried.
But Sumbal didn’t even look back at her mother and stood silently, clutching the dollhouse, her heart heavy with grief and anger.
Later, as she sat alone in her room, the dollhouse stood eerily still. The tiny doors, once always ajar, were now shut tight. A soft warmth brushed against her cheek, and she heard Sami’s voice one last time.
“Thank you, Sumbal. I am free now.”
“Rest now, Sami. I love you, my dear brother.” She said.
Her father returned that night from the business trip he had been away on and was crushed by this news. Now the question was, was he aware of what happened to Sami? That was for Sumbal to find out later. But for now she felt at peace, somewhat bittersweet.
Though the truth broke down the family, it also gave them closure.
The End.
