10 skincare tips I wish I knew sooner
Skincare is a journey where there is so much to learn—learning about products, learning about your skin, what works for you, what doesn’t and it all takes time.
So today at Sphere Medium, I want to share with you 10 skincare tips I wish I knew sooner, which I learned on my skincare journey. It took a long time for me to use that information; therefore, I want to share it with you because hopefully this might come in handy on your skincare journey.
Don’t be Strict with Cleansing
The first skincare tip I wish I had learned earlier was that I don’t need to be so strict about the products that I was using for cleansing ; Infact how thoroughly I’m cleaning my skin and how mindfully I’m tuning into that process was more important. If I could be honest, then really most of the time I was not taking my time cleansing my face; in fact, I was not being thorough enough, and that affected the efficacy of the products but I very comfortably used to blame it on the product then .
Don’t let skincare fully absorb
The second skincare tip I wish I had learned earlier was not to let all skincare absorb and dry down into skin before moving on to the next layer.
This is a tricky one for a lot of us because when doing multiple layers, if you wait for each layer to dry properly, then there is a really good chance that you might feel like things are sitting on top of your skin.
So let your serum absorb and dry into your skin only about 50% or a bit more up until your moisturizer. That’s the layer you definitely want to let really settle into your skin before moving on with the sunscreen step, and of course if you’re going in with makeup, then let it dry and settle, but everything in between, which is watery and fluid, should be applied to moist skin.
Hydration is key
The third skincare tip I really wish I had learned earlier was that hydration is not only important; it is the most crucial thing to focus on in skincare. Hydrated skin gives off the most amazing effect. The skin looks firm and smooth. I mean, hydrated, dewy, healthy, firm, plump skin is really radiant, glowy, youthful skin.
Hydrated skin is actually the skin care philosophy, which is fundamental for not only glowing and glass skin but also for treating uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, and early signs of aging.
A moisturizer makes or breaks your routine
The fourth skincare tip I wish I had learned earlier was that moisturizer can make or break your skincare routine. I was afraid of very emollient type of moisturizers earlier in my skincare journey because I’m acne-prone and my skin easily gets clogged up. I still do, but I’ve figured out a lot about my skin through my journey, so in my mind, heavy, emollient ,rich moisturizers were going to clog my pores and I’d end up with acne. And so I was always seeking out really lightweight gel cream types of moisturizers that were hydrating without oil type of content to them, and let me tell you, using the wrong moisturizer for my skin and being so afraid of those types of ingredients didn’t do me any good. My skin looked very unhealthy; it took away the glow because I wasn’t truly protecting my skin from dehydration.
Your skin will change
The fifth skincare tip I wish I learned sooner was that our skin is not static. It is constantly changing. The product that worked for you in summers will not do any good in winters. This change is not only due to changing seasons but also other external factors like pollution, smoke, and internal factors like diet, stress, hormonal disturbance, and sleep too. These factors can affect how your skin is feeling and how it’s reacting to products.
There’s a lot going on outside and inside, which contributes to how our skin looks and behaves.
Being consistent
The sixth skincare tip I learned in my skincare journey is that being consistent is way more important than trying all the things. There’s always something new coming out, which is a miracle for other people, but we need to stick to a few products and give it some time to see results. So it’s not about trying all the things out there; it’s about methodically picking up the products and the ingredients that target your specific goals and then giving those products enough time to show results so you can actually measure how something is working for you and track your progress.
Results Don’t Have to Be Expensive
The number seventh skincare tip I wish I had learned sooner is you don’t have to spend more money to see better results. I have wasted so much money at the very beginning of my skincare journey that I regret it to this day.
We need to understand that it’s not really worth spending outside the budget because it’s not the price but the consistency that will bring results. According to a survey, products that one can purchase comfortably within budget will definitely be consumed, as the buyer will be more tempted to use them more frequently. Therefore, it’s more important to have basic knowledge and understanding about ingredients and what they do for certain skin concerns so one doesn’t end up spending mindlessly. So yes, you don’t have to feel the pressure to reach outside of your comfort zone financially to achieve results with your skincare.
Results may vary
The eighth skincare tip I learned after sometime was that the result of a product may vary from person to person. What works for me may not work for you. So it’s always good not to keep expectations too high with a product just because you saw an AD on TV or because you’re favorite blogger recommended it on their channel. Be mentally prepared for it so it won’t hurt if you don’t get the same results as hers.
Healthy skin is most important
The ninth skincare tip is that the health of your skin is more important than the look of your skin. I learned that when the root health of skin, which is the skin barrier or skin moisture barrier, is in an unhealthy state, your skin is not going to look good. None of the other things you want to achieve on your skin are going to happen if the underlying health of your skin is not being taken care of, so if you know that your barrier is not in a good spot but you’re still trying to treat your acne and your dull skin and your enlarged pores and your overproduction of oil and your fine lines and wrinkles, let me just save you the stress and the time. None of that’s going to go away; none of that’s going to be resolved; none of that is going to be fixed. You’re not going to see any results. Your skin’s going to look like crap until you start fixing the internal health of your skin, then all the other stuff will fall into place, and you will start to be able to work on those goals and start to see results with your skin.
It Isn’t Just About Topical Skincare
The tenth skincare tip is that skincare isn’t just about what we put on top of our skin; in fact, it’s a holistic practice that really encompasses our lifestyle. Most of us are conditioned to think about what to apply on skin, yet we forget about considering other things like hormones, diet, stress and sleep. So it is quite important to really regard skin care as holistic care.
Skin is our body’s largest organ; it’s not just about what we’re putting on top of our skin and making it glowy, hydrated, and plump. As I mentioned earlier, what’s going on internally will manifest on the outside. There’s so much that you can learn about skincare; it’s really wild right, so I am curious to know what some tips are or lessons you wish you had learned earlier. Let me know in the comments and thanks for reading.
