Sumbal and her brother Sami - The twins | Part 2
Following Sumbal’s discovery of the unsettling note, the days got tenser. She sensed Sami’s presence more clearly every night now, like an invisible force that was constantly close by and spoke in a voice too weak to hear.
The dollhouse’s attic door creaked open by itself one night while she was in bed. Even though her heart was racing, she made herself go toward it. She discovered another note inside that read, “Find the hallway mirror.”
The words made no sense to Sumbal. While looking for a clue, Sumbal strolled around the house until she noticed the hallway mirror hanging on the wall, which had been there for years but never really paid any attention to; it was just a mirror.
But tonight the mirror seemed different as she peered into it.
Her reflection shone as she stood before it. She looked so deeply at herself as if in a trance when she saw her face had just morphed into Sami’s.
The glass rippled as if it were water. When suddenly a small hand appeared, pressed against the mirror but on the other side. Was Sami trapped inside the mirror? She thought to herself.
Sami sobbed eerily. And then suddenly disappeared.
“Sami!” cried out Sumbal, reaching out to him.
A gust of icy air swept through the hallway, extinguishing the lights. The mirror went still, her reflection returning to normal. But etched into the glass, in faint letters, were the words, “She knows.”
Sumbal staggered back to her bedroom, her breath shallow. Who was she? What did her twin want her to uncover?
From that night on, her parents grew distant, avoiding her questions about Sami.
Especially Sumbal’s mother; she would seem to always be on edge and would avoid eye contact; her hands would tremble each time Sumbal mentioned her brother’s name.
The stormy weather carried on the next day and entered the night. Such strange weather for a city like Karachi, which was mostly dry but humid, but what could be stranger than the recent happenings she thought as she tried to sleep, blocking out the whispers, which now were starting to grow louder and louder.
“Sumbal, please come find me.”
She pulled up her covers to her chin and shut her eyes, hoping that his voice would just go away. She felt scared for the first time. This was all too real; this was happening.
Sami’s voice sounded eerie and sad at the same time; he was begging his sister to come find him.
