Dada and Dadi's 59 Years of Marriage: Lessons in Lasting Love
Observing her grandparents sipping tea together, their hands firmly clasped after 59 years of marriage, Shumaila sat quietly on the sofa watching.
Like the wrinkles on their faces, their love was tough yet soft, aged yet lovely.
And then she looked at her own marriage and the problems she was facing with her husband. She sighed.
Whenever they tried to communicate, it would end up very bitter; every conversation would eventually hover toward disagreement and then disappointment.
Dada and Dadi both looked at each other and smiled when Dada gestured for Dadi to say something to Shumaila.
“Beta, it’s not easy, you know; this shaadi waadi ko sambhalna.”
Dadi brushed away some stray hairs that were irritating Shumaila’s cheek.
“It takes the two of you to tango together; marriages need to be watered like a plant, or else they will slowly begin to die.”
Dada handed over a chocolate biscuit to Shumaila, gesturing to her to eat; she took it and smiled at her Dada, who went on to say,
“Your Dada and Dadi’s marriage wasn’t a breeze.”
He took a deep breath.
“Shumaila beta, we have also had our fair share of hurdles and obstacles in the name of your great grandmother. God bless her soul.”
Dada Dadi looked at one another and giggled!
“People tried their best to separate us; you know, phupi wanted my hand in marriage her her daughter and then other cousins were interested, all the desi household dramas, but that was one thing, your Dadi and I, we also were hit with a few storms. We began to drift apart, but because we believed in each other and had faith in our relationship, we decided to cling on to each other.”
“All you got to do, beta, is communicate.” With a gentle pat on her hand, Dadi said.
“But Dadi, we try to communicate but all in vain.”
“In love, you bend a bit, and he bends a bit sometimes. It is more important to understand each other and understand the situations rather than wanting to win” said Dadi.
Shumaila listened, her heart heaving under the words they spoke. Love, she understood, required patience, sacrifice, and a determination to stick by someone through difficult times. She was reminded by their relationship that a solid marriage wasn’t created without hardships; rather, it was built on them. Having been taught that true love persists through the seasons by her cherished grandparents, Shumaila took a deep breath and decided to view her marriage with fresh eyes.
