Among the elements influencing what people think beautiful in modern society are social media, celebrity culture, and cultural standards.
Here at Sphere Medium we will give our take on what’s it like for women who are in the public eye and the influence society has on the regular woman.
Keeping up with changing expectations
Models with perfect bodies and skin, as well as the newest hairstyles and makeup, are often used to change and filter what beauty looks like. This us unrealistic ideas of what beauty is. Because of this, more people go for cosmetic procedures, extreme beauty routines, and always try to look their best. The glitz and glamour in movies, magazines, and all the crazy social media sites have led us to think that this is the way things should be. People often feel pressured to keep up with their looks because they feel, friends, critics, and the media are always watching them, which can be bad for their mental health.
When you focus on how someone looks, their skills and successes may not seem as important.
Events like Paris Fashion Week 2024 raise expectations by constantly comparing models and celebrities to these imagined standards.
Aishwarya Rai, Former Miss World 1994
There was a lot of attention on Aishwarya Rai at the Paris Fashion Week 2024, and not all for the right reasons. She donned a stunning red silk gown as she walked the runway with her hair cascading behind her, but her appearance caused a lot of trolling, especially from her own people (Indian social media users).
Don’t get me wrong, I thought she looked absolutely stunning, and she always has throughout her years in the showbiz industry, but with her being an older woman now, she, and as many others do, received a lot of pressure and hate from those who once were avid followers. People mocked Aishwarya for her apparent weight gain, her mature appearance, and her so called attempts to “fit in,” when, to be honest, she doesn’t even need to try. They didn’t even spare commenting on her pinned-up curls, (which were pinned to be taken out later for the runway) her people, totally oblivious to why they were pinned up.
Her beauty, poise and overall aura at the Paris Fashion week 2024 was breathtaking.
Aishwarya is well-known all across the globe for her brains and beauty but seeing how badly the commenting and trolling was going on was pretty much upsetting.
The show
Paris Fashion Week 2024 aims to showcase a great range of designs and looks, but it also regularly offers a place for critical critique and too high expectations.
This causes immense pressure on regular followers with regard to appearance, women constantly face a lot of backlash to maintain a specific image. This is valid whether or not they are well-known.
The Society
Constant attention society pays to women’s appearance—from their body type to their attire to their ageing—may be bad for their mental health.
The pressure to follow a range of beauty standards, from artificial body types to the need to always look young. If you wish to handle these continuous assaults, you have to learn to overlook comments from others—in person as well as online. Being in public adds more stress since everyone is watching and judging one. Events like Paris Fashion Week 2024 could either accentuate or downplay the value of personal uniqueness. To keep sane, women must understand that they are more than what others see of them and develop a sense of self-sufficiency apart from what other people think of them.
This holds true for celebrities as well as for regular woman just like you and me.
Seeking therapy
Treatment or PR companies that assist women in maintaining their mental health and image help some of them find relief. By concentrating on their own achievements, staying loyal to themselves, and valuing who they are, some people are able to transcend social expectations. Paris Fashion Week 2024 should likewise aim to support in this sense.
